Twenty-four members representing 17 businesses were in attendance Tuesday, March 20, 2007, for the monthly meeting of the Brownsville Business Association held at the Delta Room. Those present were: Diane Hooper, Gail Steele, Elmira Manns, Steven Reagan, Pam Stewart, Betty and Scottie Morris, Elizabeth Moore, Darlene Knox, Tim Stokely, Betty Williams, Harvey Livingston, Ann Gardner, Sarah Levy, Neil Hayes, Peggy Jackson, Jim Murphy, JoAnne Finn, Vickie McCartney, Joe Ing, Albert and Paulette Campbell, Pat Bailey and Sonia Outlaw-Clark.
Pat Bailey called the meeting to order and Albert Campbell opened with prayer. Pat then began with an introduction of new members present. They are Jim Murphy, Farmer’s Insurance owner James Clark, Willow Oaks Flower Farm co-owner Sarah Levy, Reagan’s Muffler owner Steven Reagan.
Sonia Outlaw-Clark presented the minutes. Motion was made and seconded. Minutes were approved as presented. She also reminded everyone to complete the sign-up sheets available at each table and informed everyone of the current membership now at 101.
Tim Stokely presented the Treasurer’s Report. The month’s beginning balance showed $673.44. With dues deposits and other donations the balance as of March 20 is $1,261.94. Tim also showed a slide projection depicting where our money is not being spent. Tim reported that in one year’s time, with current membership, the total cost for postage, billing, stationery items plus a small amount of advertising, would cost upwards of $1,302. All these costs and items have been donated thus far. Tim noted that without these donations our funds would be depleted and we would not have the cushion we currently have to build on. A motion was made and seconded to accept the report. The motion carried.
Pat called attention to the agenda and asked anyone having concerns that they would like placed on the agenda to do so by contacting any Board member.
The Board of Directors presented a Mission Statement for the approval of the membership. A motion was made and seconded. Following a short discussion, where suggestions were made concerning the length and strength of the wording, it was agreed that the Board would reconsider the Mission Statement and present a revised version at the next meeting. No action was taken on the motion.
Members were asked to turn their Logo Contest entries in before leaving. Depending on the number of entries, the Board will present all or a narrowed field of entries to the membership for voting at our next meeting.
Pat announced interest in a Spring Fling for retailers and asked any members interested to contact Betty Morris.
Joe Ing announced that the Chamber will host a Legislative update on Friday, March 30 and invited all to come hear House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh and Senator John Wilder. Ann Gardner reported that several baseball and softball tournaments will be held in Brownsville this year. It was suggested that the association might put together a mini-packet of coupons and promotional products from member to invite visitors to shop and eat in Brownsville. James Clark informed the group of a scam artist who has been canvassing the court square area asking for donations. God’s Herbs for U is sponsoring 2 teenagers, an 8th and a 10th grade student, according to owner Elmira Manns. She will be helping the students in various ways throughout their school year.
The meeting was adjourned and in celebration of the association’s 1 Year Anniversary and 101 members, cake and punch was served and a time of networking and fellowship followed.
The next meeting of the BBA will be at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, at the Delta Room (behind Backyard Barbecue), 703 East Main.
Respectfully Submitted,
Sonia Outlaw-Clark, Secretary
