Fifteen members of the business community were in attendance Thursday, June 22, 2006, for the monthly meeting of the Brownsville Merchant and Restaurant Association. Those present were: Elizabeth Moore, Tom Lea, Betty and Scottie Morris, Richard Carraway, Tim Stokely, Joe Ing, Albert and Paulette Campbell, Darlene Knox, Harvey Livingston, Elmira Manns, Daniel Thornton, Vickie McCartney, Pat Bailey and Sonia Outlaw-Clark. Twelve area businesses were represented.
President Pat Bailey called the meeting to order and Albert Campbell opened with a prayer. Minutes of the May 16, 2006, meeting was approved as e-mailed and a treasurer’s report showed that $120 has been collected for annual dues.
Pat talked about mail outs and shared some low cost options for advertising, such as including announcements in monthly statements.
Square Bash was discussed. Joe Ing reported he had spoken to the mayors and the future renovations of the court square area shouldn’t interfere with any plans. Those present agreed that they would like to keep their businesses open during the event. Daniel Thornton will check on the possibility of someone sponsoring the entertainment and will get back with the group.
The importance of customer service was discussed and merchants agreed that they would welcome a “Secret Shopper,” who will make random visits to businesses and a confidential report will be provided to that business owner. Attendees also voiced a great need for employee training in that area. Pat will contact members not present to get their consent for a “secret shopper” to visit their stores.
Guest speaker for the evening was Tom Lea, owner of The Treasure Chest. Tom talked about pitfalls and highlights of starting a business and how he went from barely making it to an established and booming business. Tom also reported that although he does no out-of-town advertising, a big portion of his business is from outside of Haywood County. His out-of-town business seems to have boomed over the last 10 years. Tom emphasized that continued education is a must regardless of the business you are in. He makes sure that he practices and perfects his craft. Up-to-date knowledge of the latest products and services goes a long way in establishing your reputation for customer service and their perception of your expertise in your field. Tom talked of the importance of pre-planning and thinking through your business decisions. His tip for success is to make the front of your business as attractive as possible and make drastic changes every month; think outside the box and do something different to keep merchandise moving.
The next meeting of the BMRA will be Tuesday, July 18, at the chamber.
